Many people are nervous at the thought of getting cataract surgery. At Eye Consultants of Texas, we want you to feel comfortable during your procedure. Being awake during any surgery can be nerve-wracking, but luckily, we have the solution: IV Free cataract surgery.
During cataract surgery, you are kept mildly sedated in order to remain relaxed and calm during the procedure. Until recently, this was done using an IV drip. A new advancement called the MKO Melt is changing all that. Now it’s possible to take a simple, oral sedative for IV Free cataract surgery, also referred to as “no IV” cataract surgery.
The MKO Melt
June 2016, Phillips Kirk Labor, MD was the first in Texas to perform an IV Free cataract procedure using the MKO Melt. As the name suggests, it’s a tablet that dissolves under the tongue, usually within 2 to 5 minutes. This option is much more reasonable for those who have a fear of needles, or simply want an easier way to remain calm during the procedure.
Before it was approved for use, the MKO Melt was carefully researched and tested in clinical trials with success. It’s designed to provide the same sedation as an IV, but like any medication, not every patient is a candidate. As part of your thorough initial examination, we’ll determine if the MKO Melt is safe for you to use before recommending it.
This represents one of many cataract surgery innovations Eye Consultants of Texas has introduced over the years. Added to the other advancements we offer, we are very proud to provide no drop, no stitch, no eye patch, no IV cataract surgery, as well as laser-assisted cataract surgery.
